Sittard
Sittard (Limburgish: Zitterd) is a town in Dutch Limburg, in the transition area between Central Limburg and the South-Limburgian hills. It is one of the oldest places in the Netherlands and the second oldest city (with city rights) in Limburg.
Since 2001, Sittard has formed together with the south-western neighboring Geleen, located in the former Western Mining Area, and a number of smaller towns, including Born, the municipality of Sittard-Geleen. Due to this merger, the municipality of Sittard-Geleen has become the third largest in terms of population (approx. 92,661) in the province.
The original hinterland of Sittard forms the historical Land of Zwentibold around the Graetheide.
Sittard is exactly squeezed between two state borders in the narrowest part of the province of Limburg, also the narrowest piece of the Netherlands. In the east and northeast it borders Germany, near the municipality of Selfkant, and in the west to the Meuse, which forms the border with Belgium.
