History
The Sint Catharina’s Gasthuis – better known as “Katrien” – belongs to the most beautiful national monuments of the center of Grave and has a rich history dating back to 1294. In that year, Jan van Cuyk founded a Catharinagasthuis for “sick and unfortunate people”. The original building was demolished in 1835. Shortly afterwards, the Franciscan nuns ‘Alles voor Allen’ from Breda realized a new convent in neoclassical style on this location, designed by architect J.H. Laffertée from ’s-Hertogenbosch. The building was completed in 1837 and served for years as a nursing home for the elderly, sick, and orphans. In addition, an orphan school was established here from 1838 onwards. Over the years, the monument has fulfilled various social functions, which contributes to the unique character of this special place.
